Beaver plays lights out against Greater Allegheny, 90-50
MCKEESPORT, Pa. – With the regular reason drawing to a close, the no.1 seeded Penn State Beaver women's basketball team delivered a dominant 90-40 road performance against PSUAC rival Penn State Greater Allegheny Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore forward Mikayla Womer (Jackson Center/Lakeview) topped the scoring list for Beaver with 19 points, eight rebounds, one assist and one steal coming off the bench, followed by junior guard Diamond Thomas (Pittsburgh/Carlynton), who finished with 18 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals.
Sophomore guard Alexis Cross (Columbiana) also contributed 17 points, six rebounds, one assist and one steal, while senior forward/center Cheyenne Lopez (Roswell/Goddard) and sophomore guard Emily Keener (Utica) added on 11 points apiece.
The Lady Lions were fired up from the jump, opening the game with a 13-2 run. Beaver went on to hold Greater Allegheny to only 9 points in the first with totaling 18 to take a 9-point lead heading into the second. While Greater Allegheny got with 5 points midway through the second (20-15), Cross drilled a three-pointer with 32 seconds before halftime to put Beaver up by double-digits (32-22). The team went on to outscore Greater Allegheny 9-3 to take a 41-25 lead at halftime.
The Lady Lions played their best quarter performance in the third, outscoring the home team 28-12, with Cross and Womer combining for 17, to take a 69-37 lead before the final stanza.
The Lady Lions stayed in control of the tempo of the game and never looked back and built their largest lead of 42 points in the fourth on a layup by freshman forward Amaya Wright (Waynesville) at 1:44 (86-44) and went on to take a 90-50 road win for the day.
Box Score Highlights: Beaver shot 52.5 percent from the field, connecting on 31-59 shots, 40 percent from 3-point range on 4-10 shots and 80 percent from the free-throw line, hitting 24-30 from the charity stripe.
After today's win, Beaver improves to a 20-3 record overall and remains in first place in the PSUAC conference standings (16-0). The Lady Lions will host Bluefield State College in their last home game of the regular season, Wednesday, Feb. 19. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
