Baseball Sweeps Clark State to Open 2011

Penn State Greater Allegheny kicked off their season in Cocoa Beach, FL with a sweep of USCAA World Series participant Clark State (OH) 2-1 and 11-6.

In game one, Junior Jon Lutz (West Mifflin, PA/West Mifflin) picked up his first victory of the season with dominating complete game performance. Lutz finished the game with 9 strikeouts, 1 earned run, while scattering 4 hits. Sophomore Robbie Shartle (Meadville, PA/Meadville) picked up two hits and an rbi in the win. Sophomore Mike Visloski (McDonald, PA/West Allegheny) and Freshman Scott Dierdorf (Aliquippa, PA/Hopewell) each added a double in the victory.

In game two, Junior Ted Fricke picked up his first victory of the season going six innings, scattering 5 hits, while striking out six. Offensively Greater Allegheny was led by Freshman Tyler Amrhein (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour) collecting three hits including a double.  Freshman Zak Schmidt (Moon, PA/Moon) knocked in three runs in the victory.

The Lions improve to 2-0 on the season, and continue play tomorrow as they play USCAA foe University of Dallas, 1 p.m. in the Cocoa Expo Stadium.
