Baseball Splits with Rochester (MI)

Penn State Greater Allegheny split a double header with Rochester (MI), winning the first game 3-2, and then dropping a close one in the second game 3-2.

In game 1, Junior starting pitcher Jon Lutz(West Mifflin) )picked up his second win in as many tries.  Lutz (2-0) went the distance, allowing just 2 runs on 2 hits, while striking out 8. Freshman center fielder Zak Schmidt (Moon) was the major contributor on offense, going 2-4, including a key 2 run single in the top of the 4th. Freshman shortstop Scott Dierdorf (Hopewell ) also added an RBI.

In game 2, the offense was led by Sophomore right fielder Mike Visloski (West Allegheny ) and Sophomore left fielder Matt Bradburn(Baldwin), who had 2 hits apiece. Freshman first basemen Adam Wehr (Northwestern ) and Freshman second basemen Kevin Quinn(West Mifflin) knocked in a run each, to keep the Lions in striking distance. Junior starting pitcher Ted Fricke (Carrick) got the nod on the mound, throwing all 7 innings. Fricke (1-1) picked up the loss, and gave up 3 runs on 5 hits, while striking out 4. In the bottom of the 7th, and with just 1 out, left fielder Matt Bradburn tripled to deep right, setting up the potential tying run. However, Greater Allegheny could not get him home, and they dropped a heart breaker, 3-2.

With the split, Penn State Greater Allegheny's record now stands at 7-2. They will finish up their Cocoa Beach trip with a 10:00 AM game tomorrow against Manhattanville (NY).
