Baseball Splits Conference Opener with PSU-Brandywine

The Penn State Greater Allegheny baseball program split their conference opener with PSU Brandywine on Saturday afternoon 2-4 and 11-7.

In game 1, Freshman starting pitcher Scott Dierdorf (Hopewell) took the hill for Greater Allegheny. Dierdorf cruised through the first 3 innings, but ran into some trouble in the 4th, giving up a 3-run home run, and then another run in the 5th. Dierdorf (1-3) suffered the loss for GA, striking out 9, giving up just 4 hits, while going the distance. Leading the charge on offense for Greater Allegheny was left fielder Matt Bradburn (Baldwin) with 2 hits. Pitcher Scott Dierdorf and center fielder Zak Schmidt (Moon) each collected a hit and knocked in a run.

In game 2, Greater Alleghney's offense exploded and Junior Jon Lutz (West Mifflin) picked up his third victory of the season in a 11-7 victory. Offensively Freshman Zak Schmidt (Moon) had a huge day at the plate going 3-3 with 2 triples, a homerun, and three rbi's. Junior Ted Fricke (Carrick) also picked up two hits, blasted a double, and knocked in two runs.

Greater Allegheny now stand at 9-7 overall and 1-1 in the PSUAC. The lions will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to LaRoche College, first pitch is 3:00 p.m.
