Baseball Takes Out PSU-Mont Alto, Improves to 5-1 in PSUAC

Penn State Greater Allegheny picked up 2 more wins Sunday, sweeping Penn State Mont Alto by scores of 10-0 and 1-0.

In game 1, the Greater Allegheny bats caught fire, led by Sophomore Jason Paris' (Chartiers Houston) 2 hits and 2 RBIs.  Freshman center fielder Zak Schmidt (Moon), Sophomore second baseman Ted Fricke (Carrick), Sophomore outfielder Mike Visloski (West Allegheny), Sophomore third baseman Robbie Shartle (Meadville), and Senior catcher Nate Raffle (GCC) each added an RBI a piece. Junior starting pitcher John Lutz earned his 4th victory of the season, going the distance for GA. Lutz surrendered just 2 hits, and struck out 6.

Game 2 turned out to be quite a pitcher's duel, with no runs surrender until the final at-bat. In the bottom of the 7th, Freshman shortstop Dany Laird (Steel Valley) was able to earn a walk to lead off the rally. After moving over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sophomore outfielder Matt Bradburn (Baldwin), Laird then advanced to third on a wild pitch. With 2 outs, Freshman outfielder Zak Schmidt (Moon) knocked in the game-winning run with a single to center field.  Freshman catcher Bill Hodgetts (West Mifflin) also contributed to the winning effort, by gunning out 2 key Mont Alto runners trying to steal second.

Penn State Greater Allegheny improves its overall record to 13-8, and 5-1 in the PSUAC. Greater Allegheny will return to the diamond Tuesday, when they face off against Penn State Fayette in a double header at Pullman Park in Butler. First pitch is 11:00 AM.
