Baseball Captures PSUAC League Championship

The Penn State Greater Allegheny baseball program clinched its second consecutive PSUAC League Championship with a sweep of PSU-Hazleton 11-1 and 13-1. The sweep gives Greater Allegheny the #1 seed in next weeks PSUAC Tournament at Medlar Field in State College, PA.

In game 1, Ted Fricke (Carrick) picked up the victory going five innings, striking out 12, and only giving up three hits. Four Lion players picked up multi hit games: Sophomore Robbie Shartle (Meadville) had three hits and 2 rbi's, Freshman Zak Schmidt (Moon) added two hits, Senior Nate Raffle (GCC) picked up two hits and knocked in three, and Freshman Dan Laird (Steel Valley) picked up two hits. Freshman Scott Dierdorf (Hopewell) also added a double and three rbi's.

In game 2, Laird was dominant on the mound going the distance allowing only four hits, while striking out seven. Schmidt led off the game with a solo homerun, his fourth of the season. Dierdorf was two for three with his fifth home run of the season. Fricke also picked up two hits, and Sam Weightman (Penn-Trafford) had two hits including a double.

Greater Allegheny improves to 23-10 overall and 15-1 in the PSUAC. The lions will be back in action tomorrow as they wrap up PSUAC play with a 12:00 p.m. double header versus PSU-Scranton.
