Baseball Cruises To Double-Header Sweep Over Wilkes-barre

McKeesport, Pa- Sophomore first baseman Adam Wehr (Northwestern Lehigh, PA) drove in eight runs on the day, leading Greater Allegheny to a comfortable two game sweep of visiting Penn State Wilkes-barre.  GA won in 5 innings, 13-0 in game 1, and 10-0 in 6 innings, in game 2.

Greater Allegheny got on the board early and often in the first two innings of game 1, getting eight runs across.  Sophomore designated hitter Sam Weightman (Penn Trafford, PA) drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly, knocking in freshman left fielder Oliver Girman (Serra Catholic PA).

Two early walks in the second inning, followed by a Girman double to center field, plated two more GA runners.  Following another walk, Adam Wehr cleared the bases with a 3-RBI double to deep right field, putting GA up 6-0.  Sam Weightman followed with the third double of the inning- knocking in the seventh run- and then came around to score on an error.

After a scoreless third, GA got back on the board with five runs in the fourth inning.  Freshman Tyler Thellman (Blackhawk, PA) drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to right.  Two walks and a hit batter forced home two Great Allegheny runs, with Adam Wehr driving in two more with his second double of the game.

Freshman pitcher Eddie Emes (New Brighton, PA) silenced the Wilkes-barre hitters all game, in picking up the win.  Emes (2-1) allowed just 5 hits over 5 innings, and struck out 7 opposing hitters.  Adam Wehr led GA with 5 RBI's, going 2-4 with 2 doubles.  Oliver Girman went 2-2 with 3 RBI's and 3 runs, while Sam Weightman picked up 2 RBI's of his own.

Game 2 went much the same for Greater Allegheny,  although most of their offense did not come until the sixth inning.  Sophomore center fielder Zak Schmidt (Moon, PA) led off the game with a single, and came around to score on an Adam Wehr double.

GA scored two more runs in the third, getting the first across when senior second baseman Teddy Fricke (Carrick) doubled home Oliver Girman.  Adam Wehr again drilled a double, plating Fricke.  In the fifth, they pushed their lead to 4-0 when Fricke singled home Girman, after Girman doubled.  The Greater Allegheny offense exploded for six runs in the sixth inning, ending the game at 10-0.

Senior pitcher Jonathan Lutz (West Mifflin, PA) picked up the win, tossing 5 shutout innings.  Lutz (2-3) struck out 6 and surrendered a mere 2 hits.  Freshman Matt Klena (Shaler, PA) came on to pitch a scoreless sixth, in relief of Lutz.  Adam Wehr again led GA on offense, going 2-2 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI's.  Teddy Fricke also collected 2 hits, while driving in 2 runs.

With the PSUAC sweep, Greater Allegheny evens its record at 9-9 overall, and jumps out to 2-0 in conference games.  They will return to the diamond next Saturday, March 31 as they host non-conference foe OSU-Chillecothe.
