Baseball Sweeps Ohio-Chillicothe In Dominating Fashion

McKeesport, Pa- Dominating pitching and powerful hitting led Greater Allegheny to a comfortable double-header sweep over Ohio-Chillicothe, winning game 1 10-0 (5 inn.) and game 2 11-1 (5 inn.).  On the afternoon, GA would out-hit Chillicothe 22-4.

  GA got on the board in second, when junior outfielder Mike Visloski (West Allegheny, PA) knocked in sophomore designated hitter Sam Weightman (Penn Trafford, PA) by reaching on a fielder's choice. 

  The bats then exploded in the third, as GA scored eight runs.  Freshman shortstop Tyler Thellman (Blackhawk, PA) led off with walk, and then advanced to third on a double by sophomore outfielder Zak Schmidt (Moon, PA).  Thellman would then score on a sacrifice fly by freshman outfielder Oliver Girman (Serra Catholic, PA).  Senior second baseman Teddy Fricke followed with a single, driving in Schmidt.  Five more hits and six runs later, Greater Allegheny led 9-0 through three innings.

  Back up in the bottom of the fifth, junior catcher Josh Kubisz (Goose Creek, SC) singled up the middle to lead off the inning.  Sophomore Kevin Quinn (West Mifflin, PA) came in to pinch-run for Kubisz, and advanced to third on a double by Mike Visloski.  Freshman Clay Groff (Allderdice,PA) came up next as a pinch-hitter, and drove in Quinn- clinching the 10-0 GA victory.

  Freshman pitcher Eddie Emes (New Brighton, PA) was stellar on the mound, shutting out the Ohio-Chillicothe batters.  He struck out 7 hitters through his 5 innings of work, surrendering just 1 hit and 1 walk.  Emes (3-1) ended the game by retiring 8 straight opposing hitters.

  Josh Kubisz led the GA bats, going 3-3 with a run and RBI.  Mike Visloski also had a strong game at the plate, going 2-3 with 2 RBI's and a run.  Eight different Greater Allegheny batters would record an RBI. 

  Game 2 ran much to a similar script, as Greater Allegheny got on board in the second inning.  Sam Weightman led-off the inning with a single to left field, advanced to second on a walk, and then scored on an RBI single from Clay Groff.  Later in the inning, a walk and a fielder's choice plated two more runs, giving GA the 3-0 lead.

  As in game 1, the Greater Allegheny bats opened up the game in the third.  They would score six runs on four hits, led by a 2-RBI single by Clay Groff.  With a 9-0 lead heading into fourth, GA added another run when Zak Schmidt walked with the bases loaded.

  Ohio-Chillicothe would score their lone run of the afternoon in the top of fifth, making the score 10-1.  Up in their half of the fifth, sophomore first baseman Adam Wehr (Northwestern Lehigh, PA) earned a lead-off walk, and was pinch-ran for by sophomore Tyler Kugler (Serra Catholic, PA).  Sam Weightman then singled to center, and the speedy Kugler came all the way around to score, ending the game at 11-1.

  Freshman pitcher Aaron McGee (Penn Trafford, PA) earned the win, pitching 4 strong innings.  McGee (2-2) struck out 5, walked 1, while giving up just 1 hit.  Clay Groff was stellar at the plate, going 3-3 with 3 RBI's and 2 runs scored.  Zak Schmidt and Tyler Thellman added 2 RBI's each, with Schmdit going 1-3 with a run.

  Greater Allegheny has now won 4 straight, and improves its record to 11-9 overall.  They return to action tomorrow for a double-header against PSUAC foe, Penn State Worthington Scranton.  First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
