Baseball Improves to 4-0 In PSUAC Play

McKeesport, Pa-  For the second straight day, the Greater Allegheny baseball team powered its way to a double-header sweep- this time, defeating PSUAC foe Penn State Worthington Scranton.  GA completely ran away with game 1, winning 28-0 in five innings.  They followed with a 10-0 win in game 2, also in five innings.

In a game 1 rout, Greater Allegheny amassed 24 hits, including six doubles and two home runs.  GA scored a run in the first, and then tacked on eight more in the second.  Junior outfielder Mike Visloski (West Allegheny, PA) capped off the inning with a two-run homer to deep center field.

The bats exploded yet again in the third, with Greater Allegheny scoring twelve more runs.  Junior third baseman Jason Paris (Chartiers Houston, PA) crushed a two-run homer to center, scoring sophomore outfielder Zak Schmidt (Moon, PA), who had reached on an error.  That got the huge inning going, as six hits, four errors, and 10 runs later, GA now led 21-0 after three.

A seven-hit, seven-run fourth, then pushed the lead to 28-0. A quick top of the fifth inning for GA pitcher-freshman Matt Klena (Shaler, PA)- ended the game. Klena (2-0) earned the win and was strong on the mound, pitching 5 shutout innings.  He struck out 6, walked 1, and allowed just 2 hits.

Of the 24 Greater Allegheny hits, seven different hitters recorded 2 or more.  Jason Paris (3-3), freshman outfielder Oliver Girman (Serra Catholic, PA) (3-4), and freshman shortstop Aaron McGee (Penn Trafford) (3-4) all tallied 3 hits and 3 RBI's.  Sophomore catcher Bill Hodgetts (West Mifflin, PA) also knocked in 3 runs, going 2-3.  Mike Visloski led the offense with 5 RBI's, including 2 on his home run to center.

In game 2, the GA offense used a steadier approach to run up the score, scoring two runs each in five different innings.  Up in the first, sophomore second baseman Kevin Quinn (West Mifflin, PA) singled to center and then stole second.  Sophomore first baseman Adam Wehr (Northwestern Lehigh, PA) followed with a two-run blast over the the center field fence.

In the third, sophomore outfielder Tyler Kugler (Serra Catholic, PA) lined a double to left, and later came around to score on an RBI single by Kevin Quinn. Sophomore Sam Weightman (Penn Trafford, PA) continued his hot season by drilling his 10th double of the year, scoring Quinn. Greater Allegheny would then score 2 runs in each of the next three innings, clinching the 10-0 shutout.

Senior pitcher Teddy Fricke (Carrick, PA) picked up the win, pitching 5 shutout innings.  Fricke (2-1) fanned a season-high 11, walked 1, and surrendered just 3 hits.  Kevin Quinn led the GA bats, going 3-4 with 3 RBI's and 2 runs.  Freshman shortstop Tyler Thellman (Blackhawk, PA) was also strong at the plate, going 2-3 with an RBI and 2 runs.

With another impressive sweep, Greater Allegheny improves to 13-9 overall and 4-0 in PSUAC games.  Next on the slate, an April 3  trip to CONSOL Energy Park to take on Penn State Fayette. First pitch of the afternoon twin bill is set for 2:00 PM.
