Baseball Drops Two Florida Contests

Vero Beach, Fl- On a tough and chilly opening day of Spring Training, the Greater Allegheny baseball (1-2) team suffered a 9-1 loss to USCAA foe, Clark State, before also falling to Division-II Univeristy of Mary, 15-3.

Senior outfield Mike Visloski (McDonald, PA/West Allegheny) went 1-2 and tallied the lone RBI in game one against Clark State, as his third inning sacrifice fly plated sophomore outfielder Oliver Girman (Monroeville, PA/Serra Catholic), who earlier reached on a single.  Sophomore right-hander Eddie Emes (New Brighton, PA/New Brighton) took the loss on the mound, surrendering nine runs over his four innings of work.  Emes (0-1) struck out six while walking just one.  Sophomore righ-hander Dan Laird (Munhall, PA/Steel Valley) struck out six over three shutout innings of one-hit ball.

A six spot in the bottom of the first gave the University of Mary an early and comfortable jump in game two, with GA scratching across their three runs in the top half of sixth.  Sophomore catcher Clay Groff (Pittsburgh, PA/Allderdice) went 2-4 with a triple and an RBI, while junior first baseman Adam Wehr (Orefield, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) went 1-2 with a double.  Sophomore right-hander Matt Klena (Glenshaw, PA/Shaler) suffered the loss, allowing 10 runs on 12 hits over four innings of work.  Klena (0-1) struck out one and walked three.

The JV squad was defeated 10-6 by the Patriotes Academy (QB).

Greater Allegheny returns to the diamond tomorrow afternoon for a rematch with Clark State at noon.  They will follow it up with a 4 PM tilt against Rochester (MI).
