Baseball Splits USCAA Double-Header

Vero Beach, Fl- In their final full day of Spring Training in the Sunshine State, the Greater Allegheny (4-5) baseball team split two games between USCAA members as they fell 3-1 to Apprentice, before bouncing back to defeat Miami-Hamilton 8-3.

Sophomore right-hander Matt Klena (Glenshaw, PA/Shaler) pitched a strong complete game in their first of the day, allowing just the three runs on four Apprentice hits.  Klena (0-2) also struck out three while walking three.  Freshman shortstop Luke Koshinsky (Plum, PA/Plum) went 1-3 including a double to right center.

GA's fortunes at the plate turned skyward in the nightcap, as they plated three runs through the first two innings.  Junior first baseman Adam Wehr (Orefield, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) singled home the game's first run, with a bunt from Koshinsky scoring another.

Miami-Hamilton would fight back to tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth, as a lead-off triple against GA right-hander, sophomore Eddie Emes (New Brighton, PA/New Brighton), started the rally. Greater Allegheny retaliated in the seventh with three runs to put themselves back on top, as Koshinsky and McGee recorded RBI's.

Freshman left-hander Zach Krivda (McKeesport, PA/McKeesport) pitched two shutout innings of relief, sealing the GA win.  Emes (1-1) picked up his first win of the season, as he allowed three runs on just three hits.  While walking four, he also struck out nine.  Wehr went 3-4 with two RBI's, while freshman Brian Colon (Carolina, PR/University Gardens) went 2-5.

Greater Allegheny will complete its Florida trip tomorrow morning, with a 9 AM game against West Virginia Tech.
