Butler, Pa- After a chilling, 8-4 loss in game one, the Greater Allegheny (7-7) baseball team rode their blazing bats and junior Evan James' (Harrison City, PA/Western Oklahoma State) right arm to an 11-2 victory, splitting the double-header with visiting SUNY-Canton.
James (2-1) surrendered two runs to open the game, but an RBI single from senior second baseman Jason Paris (Houston, PA/Chartiers Houston) capped off a three run answer in the bottom of the first, giving GA the 3-2 lead.
Up 4-2 entering the home half of the fifth, GA quickly plated four more runs, before junior first baseman Adam Wehr (Orefield, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) stepped up with two men on. Wehr then took the first pitch he saw and maliciously deposited it over the "385" sign in left-center field, increasing the advantage to 11-2.
That lead served as more than enough for the right-hander James, as he fired six shutout innings of one-hit ball the rest of way, securing his second win of the season. He allowed a paltry four hits, while striking out and walking two batters.
Junior outfielder Mike Visloski (McDonald, PA/West Allegheny) collected three hits and scored five runs on the afternoon, with Paris belting four hits while driving in two runs. Sophomore catcher Clay Groff (Pittsburgh, PA/Allderdice) went 2-4 in game two with a double.
Greater Allegheny returns to the diamond Wednesday, March 20 for a double-header against NAIA foe, Point Park. Game one of the twin bill is set for 1 PM.
