Baseball Drops Double-Header to WVU-Tech

Butler, Pa- In their second and third meetings with WVU-Tech this season, the Greater Allegheny (10-11) baseball team suffered 3-1 and 7-3 defeats in a pair of tightly contested games.

GA quickly answered a fourth inning run from WVU-Tech in game one, as junior Adam Wehr's (Orefield, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) sacrifice fly plated sophomore Zach Zeroski (Imperial, PA/West  Allegheny), tying the game at 1-1.

Sophomore right-hander Oliver Girman (Monroeville, PA/Serra Catholic) cruised through his first two innings of work in the fifth and sixth, before surrendering two runs in the top of the seventh.  Girman (0-1) took the loss, as he allowed the two runs on five hits through his three innings of duty.

Junior right-hander Evan James (Harrison City, PA/Western Oklahoma State) started the game for Greater Allegheny, and went unscathed through two innings, allowing just two hits.  Freshman left-hander Kevin Silvio (Pittsburgh, PA/Allderdice) also tossed two strong innings, as he allowed one run on three hits while striking out two.

Trailing 2-0 through the top of the second inning, Wehr then stepped up to the plate and belted a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence, giving GA its first run in game two.  A single from sophomore catcher Clay Groff (Pittsburgh, PA/Allderdice) turned into their second run, as sophomore second baseman Aaron McGee (Harrison City, PA/Penn-Trafford) followed with an RBI double to deep center.  A second consecutive RBI double, this time from freshman shortstop Tom Williams (Penn-Trafford, PA/Penn-Trafford), lifted Greater Allegheny to an early 3-2 advantage.

While keeping GA off the board for the remainder of the evening, WVU-Tech was able to scratch across four late runs, leading to their game two victory.  Sophomore right-hander Matt Klena (Glenshaw, PA/Shaler) suffered the loss, giving up two runs- one earned- on three hits over three innings.  Klena (0-4) struck out one and walked three.

Wehr totaled three hits and two RBI's on the day, including his solo home run in game two.  Williams and McGee drove in the other two GA runs, on back-to-back doubles in the second game.

Greater Allegheny finishes up a three game series with WVU-Tech tomorrow morning, as they will play one game at 11 AM.
