DuBois, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Men’s Basketball team suffered their first Penn State University Athletic Conference loss on Friday as they fell to Penn State DuBois (5-4, 3-2) 80-74). The offense could never find its groove in the game and despite another big day from Jeremy McMunn (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) they couldn’t get it done in the end.
DuBois was able to get the upper hand very early in this ball game as they went on a 9-0 run to get things started before PSUGA would even get on the board. PSUGA would score the next five points before DuBois was able to run away with the first half. It was the third straight game that PSUGA went into the break trailing as DuBois led 39-35. The prior two games PSUGA was able to dig out of a hole and they would try to once again.
Unlike the previous two games, PSUGA would not be able to get out of this one as DuBois continued to put their foot on the gas in the second half and once again outscored PSUGA 41-39 to seal their victory. It was the first conference loss of the season for PSUGA as they get ready to head into the holiday break.
Jeremy McMunn led the team with 16 points off the bench as he continues to thrive since making the move to the bench. Mhonte Newsome (Baltimore, Md./Our Lady of Mt. Carmel) put up 13 points tying his season high and Curtis Newby (Sharon, Pa./Sharon HS) was the final PSUGA lion to score in double digits with 10 points on the day.
Newby would pick up another double-double in this game with a season high 17 rebounds in the loss. Newby has been a rebound machine throughout his career as he is approaching the PSUGA all-time record for career rebounds sitting just nine away from capturing the title. Newby has 695 in his PSUGA career and Petire Addison holds the record with 704. Khari Hicks (East Hills, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) led the team with three assists on the day.
PSUGA scored under 80 points for just the third time this season and fell to 1-2 in those three games. Jordon Payne (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) was held under double digits for the first time this season as he could only manage eight points on the day. Curtis Newby was the only starter to score in double digits as most of the points came from the bench.
PSUGA now takes a break for the holiday season before returning to action on January 12th 2018 inside the Wunderly Gymnasium when they take on Penn State Wilkes-Barre at 8 p.m. From all of us here in the Penn State Greater Allegheny Athletic Department, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
