PSUGA Men Riding Momentum into Mont Alto

McKeesport, Pa. – The #18 Penn State Greater Allegheny Men’s Basketball Team (8-4, 5-3) has been on a roll lately winning their last four games and going from being 1-3 in Penn State University Athletic Conference play to 5-3 and sitting in third place in the West Division. They look to continue their string of success when they go on the road to take on Penn State Mont Alto (9-5, 6-2) on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

PSUGA picked up their fourth straight win on Saturday when they took down PSU-New Kensington 101-86. It was an early 10-2 run that put PSUGA out in front, and they went into the locker room leading 47-35. They would add 53 more points in the second half and scored over 100 points for the third time this season and moved to 5-3 in conference play.

Mhonte Newsome (Baltimore, MD./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) had a career day leading the way with 24 points and 7 rebounds while Antonio Hill (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin HS) added 17 points of his own. George Prota (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward HS) led the defense with nine rebounds while putting up 15 points in the win.

After picking up a win to end the 2018 portion of their season, PSUGA’s offense has made a complete turn around in 2019 going 3-0 while averaging 86.7 points per game. Jordon Payne (McKeesport, PA./McKeesport HS) hasn’t been the top scorer for PSUGA in the second half, however, he has been passing the ball and getting his teammates involved getting seven or more assists in each of his last two games. This has allowed guys like Hill and Newsome the opportunity to carry the team and they have done just that.

PSU-Mont Alto comes into 2019 on a hot streak as well winning each of their first two games including a 70-51 win over PSU-DuBois last time out. It was a battle early on with Mont Alto finding themselves down 26-24 at halftime. However, they put up 46 points over the second half to walk away with the victory. Jalen Smith and Devante Nelson led the way with 15 points each in the win.

In the all-time matchup, it has been Mont Alto that has had success winning seven of the last eight matchups against PSUGA. PSUGA is trying to even the season series after falling earlier in the year 63-57. PSUGA fell behind early and, despite scoring 37 second half points were unable to rebound. It was Payne leading the way with 15 points on the day and PSUGA fell to 1-3 in conference play.
