Newsome's Record 24 Points Leads to Win Over New Kensington

McKeesport, PA. - Throughout the Penn State Greater Allegheny Men's Basketball teams (8-4, 5-3) four game winning streak, they have found a different way to win every night. In Saturday it was a career high 24 point effort from Mhonte Newsome (Baltimore, MD./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) that led PSUGA to a 101-86 victory over PSU-New Kensington.

It would be senior Jordon Payne (McKeesport, PA./McKeesport HS) that got the offense started with two three pointers that started a 10-2 run for PSUGA over the first three minutes of the game. Their lead would keep growing throughout the half to as much as 26-12 halfway through the first half.

Newsome would start his offensive tear scoring nine points over the final ten minutes of the half and PSUGA headed into the locker room leading 47-35. With the starters off to a slow start, it was the bench providing most of the offense early with Newsome scoring 14 total in the half while George Prota (Elizabeth, PA./Elizabeth Forward HS) contributed 12 points in the half.

After trading the first couple buckets of the second half, it would once again be PSUGA's offense that found an opening going on a 6-0 run that brought their lead to 57-39. However, New Ken would keep fighting going on runs of 8-0 and 6-0 to cut the PSUGA lead to just 68-56 with 11 minutes to go.

PSUGA's offense continued to click pushing the game out of reach with a 7-0 run that gave PSUGA a 19 point lead. Head coach Tyler Care got to empty his bench over the final five minutes of the game and his team would score over 100 points for the third time this season picking up a 101-86.

Newsome's 24 point effort led the way for PSUGA while pulling in seven rebounds. Antonio Hill (West Mifflin, PA./West Mifflin HS) added 17 points and Prota led the defense with 9 rebounds while scoring 15 points on the day.

With the win, PSUGA has now won their last four games and improved their record from 1-3 to 5-3 and jumped from fifth place to third place in the division. With the wins, PSUGA is setting themselves up for a fourth straight playoff run in the Penn State University Athletic Conference.

PSUGA returns to action on Tuesday when they go on the road to take on PSU-Mont Alto at 8 p.m.
