Golf Looking to Lower Scores at Fayette Invitational

McKeesport, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Golf team continues their 2019 season when they travel to the PSU-Fayette Invitational on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Uniontown Country Club. After finishing in 6th place out of six teams their last time out, head coach Mark Valko and his team are looking to lower their scores overall and find their way to the upper levels of the pack.

They traveled to the PSU-DuBois Invitational last time out and were led once again by two sub-90 shooters. Freshman Justin Wortman (Ashburn, VA./Briar Woods HS) led the way shooting an 81 on the par 71 course. It was a season-low in strokes for Wartman who was able to get good positioning thanks to his strong tee shots. It is the second week in a row that Wartman has been featured as the team’s top golfer as he continues to find success.

Senior Bert Hinton (Richmond, VA./Benedictine College Prep) also had success finishing with an 87 and finishing second on the team. Hinton has consistently hit in the mid-‘80s in each of his first two outings of the year and has shown a good approach to the game. For Hinton, he can to work through the short game and get on the green that has led to his success.

Wartman, Hinton, and freshman Sean Murphy (Turtle Creek, PA./Woodland Hills HS) are on pace to qualify for the Penn State University Athletic Conference/United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships on October 6th, 7th, and 8th. With their averages sitting at 81.5, 85.5, and 91 respectively, they are looking like three of the likely representatives for PSUGA at the event.

Coming in close behind on the Women’s side is freshman Angie Nylander (Elizabeth, PA./Elizabeth Forward HS) who is averaging 110.5 through her first two courses. She shot a career-low 110 at the PSU-Fayette Invitational and needs to lower her average to at least a 105 to be able to make the trip.

The PSU-Fayette Invitational will be held at the Uniontown Country Club and will feature teams from the USCAA, NCAA Division III, NAIA, and NJCAA. The Uniontown Country Club is a par 71 course measuring 6,115 yards and features smaller greens and well-groomed fairways.

Tee times for Saturday’s Invitational are set to begin at 10 a.m. with light refreshments being served for participants after the event as well as an award ceremony.
