Wortman Murphy lead way at PSU White Course

University Park, PA. - The Penn State Greater Allegehny Golf team got strong perfornances from three of it's newcomers as they kicked off the year at the PSU White Course on Thursday. PSUGA had three different players finish with scores under 85 setting a good start for the year.

Freshman Justin Wortman (Ashburn, VA./Broad Woods HS) led PSUGA shooting an 81 through the 18-hole course. He shot just nine over par and tied for the 12th lowest score amongst the field of competitors as he started off the season strong.

Senior Bert Hinton (Richmond, VA./Benedictine College Prep) and freshman Sean Murphy (Churchill, PA./Woodland Hills HS) joined Wartman in shooting sub 85 days. Murphy finished second on the team shooting an 82 while Hinton added an 84 to round out the top three.

On the women side, PSUGA had two competitors as part of a field of seven, the most women to ever compete in the event. Freshman Angie Nylander (Elizabeth, PA./Elizabeth Forward HS) led the women's side shooting a 111 while Sophomore Taylor Coccia (Elizabeth, PA./Elizabeth Forward HS) shot a 117.

Out of the 12 teams that competed on Thursday, PSUGA finished 10th with an overall score of 358. PSUGA still has five meets to go this season and have many positives to build off of. Head Coach Mark Valko was pleased with his players performances and sees a lot to build on for the rest of the season.

The PSUGA Golf team is back in action on Monday, September 9th, when they travel to the PSU-DuBois Invitational at 10 a.m.
