DuBois, PA. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Golf team saw a lot of individual improvements as they competed at the PSU-DuBois Invitational on Monday. They once again had two golfers hit under the 90-stroke mark and are starting to show some consistency through the first two matches of the season.
As a team, PSUGA finished in 6th place at the PSU-DuBois Invitational, which was held at the DuBois Country Club. The course featured a par 71 that provided a challenge for many of the competitors from every team. Despite the challenges, PSUGA’s top golfers improved on their scores from the first invitational and continue to grow throughout the season.
Freshman Justin Wortman (Ashburn, VA./Briar Woods HS) once again was the team’s number one golfer finishing 11 over par with a score of 82. He finished tied for the 6th lowest score across the field improving his overall positioning in the standings by 7 places. Among his Penn State University Athletic Conference opponents, Wortman finished tied for the 2nd lowest score with PSU-DuBois’s Colin Moore.
Senior Bert Hinton (Richmond, VA./Benedictine College Prep) was the other PSUGA golfer to finish with a sub-90 score as he shot an 87 on the day. For Hinton, his strokes went up by three from the White Course Invitational, but head coach Mark Valko said he was able to stay consistent and provide PSUGA with a good effort throughout the day.
Freshmen Sean Murphy (Churchill, PA./Woodland Hills HS) and Alex Myers (Oswego, NY./Oswego HS) were the other two male competitors for PSUGA, finishing with scores of 100 and 123 on the day. For Myers, it was a big improvement from his last timeout as he got his score down by nine points and showed growth through the first two meets.
On the women’s side, it was freshman Angie Nylander (Elizabeth, PA./Elizabeth Forward HS) leading the way with a score of 110, improving by one stroke from her last time out. Among the female competitors at the event, Nylander finished second on the day and has proven herself as one of the top women golfers in the PSUAC. Sophomore Taylor Coccia (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward HS) also competed for PSUGA finishing the day with a 117.
The PSUGA Golf team continues to get stronger in its second season of competition and has seen its golfers continue to grow. As the season moves forward, PSUGA is trying to make the PSUAC/United States Collegiate Athletic Association championships and already has two players on course to make the event.
The PSUGA Golf team returns to action on Tuesday, September 17th, when they head to the Penn State New Kensington Invitational with a tee time of 10 a.m.
