Southern State CC Edges Out Greater Allegheny Men's Soccer in 2-1 OT Bout

McKeesport, Pa. - In their first contest of the 2014-15 campaign, the Penn State Greater Allegheny men's soccer team drops a 2-1 decision in overtime over Southern State Community College, Sunday afternoon.

An extremely tight first half saw nine shots from Greater Allegheny on the Southern State's defense. Making his goaltending debut for GA was freshman Giovianni Vega (Aguadilla, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Carlos), as he stopped six out of the eight shots SSCC took on net through the first 45 minutes.

Southern State was the first on the board just eight minutes into the second half, as they worked the ball down the field to slide past GA, 1-0. Greater Allegheny answered back ten minutes later, as freshman midfielder Marin Marina (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) received a pass from fellow freshman midfielder Bimal Bhattarai (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) on the right side of the net, lofting the ball into the lower left to even the notch at one apiece.

Regulation wound down to zero as the teams were still deadlocked at one. Both teams managed seven shots on net as Vega stopped five in goal. The game went into extra minutes as GA and SSCC were both eager for their first win of the season.

With just 38 seconds left in the first overtime period, Southern State managed to sneak a ball past the goalies gloves in the lower left of the net, catapulting SSCC to their first win of the season, 2-1.

Greater Allegheny managed 17 shots through 102 minutes of play, as Vega faced 13 shots on goal.

Greater Allegheny looks forward to Thursday, September 4th, as GA welcomes Allegheny to McClure Middle School in White Oak for a 4 p.m. kick-off.
