Early Offense Leads to Fourth Straight Win

McKeesport, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Soccer Team (4-1, 3-0) continues to ride high as they picked up their fourth straight win on Sunday defeating Penn State Schuylkill (2-5, 1-2) by the final score of 3-1.

The PSUGA offense struck early and often as all three goals were scored in the first half of play. Schuylkill scored an early goal in the 12th minute of action to take a 1-0 lead. However, PSUGA answered just 13 minutes later as Allen Conteh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) tied the game with his first goal of the season in the 25th minute of play.

PSUGA would ultimately take the lead for good just ten minutes later as Senior Jake Theiret (Port Vue, Pa./South Allegheny) went streaking down the field and notched his first goal of the 2017/18 season to give the Lions a 2-1 lead in the 35th minute. A foul on the same play lead to the ultimate game winning goal as Junior Belmo Nurkic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) collected his fourth goal of the season on a penalty kick that gave PSUGA a cushion that they would work with for the rest of the game.

Defense ruled the second half as PSUGA was able to possess the ball and not allow Schuylkill many offensive opportunities. Leela Nepal (m/m) was key on defense as he got the ball back in Greater Allegheny possession several times in the ball game. PSUGA kept Schuylkill off the board for the entirety of the second half and cruised along to the 3-1 victory.

PSUGA took advantage of their opportunities when they had the ball out shooting Schuylkill 21-9 and getting more shots on goal 16-4. Colin Bucsok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) picked up his fourth win of the season and is now 4-1 as a member of the PSUGA Lions. Marin Marina (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) led his team in shots collecting four in total including three shots on goal, however, he was held in check offensively not scoring a goal in the game.

PSUGA is off to one of its best starts in program history sitting at 4-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Penn State University Athletic Conference play. The Soccer team is looking to make the PSUAC playoffs for the fourth year in a row and are well on their way to doing that with this hot start to the season.

The soccer team will get a couple days off to regroup before they are back in action on Thursday September 28th when they continue conference play going on the road to face off against Penn State New Kensington at 4 p.m.
