Softball Drops Conference Double-Header at Penn College

Williamsport, Pa- The Greater Allegheny softball team fell to 1-9 on the season following a double-header sweep at the hands of Penn College.  GA nearly completed the come back before falling 5-3 in game 1, then were defeated 8-0 in game 2.

Penn College scored all 5 of their game 1 runs in the first inning, off GA starting pitcher, freshman Kristen Popp (McKeesport, PA).   Greater Allegheny cut into the lead with a run in the second, when sophomore Sydney McMullen (Trinity, PA) grounded out to the pitcher, scoring freshman Theresa Gionta (Mission Viejo, CA).

The next four innings remained scoreless, until GA was able to score two runs in the top of the seventh, cutting the lead to 5-3.  Sophomore Sam Segiel (Norwin, PA) singled home fellow sophomore Kaitlyn Kirkpatrick (Elizabeth Forward, PA), bringing Greater Allegheny to within 3, at 5-2.  Freshman Colleen Kuplast (Cranston East, RI) followed with a double, plating Sydney McMullen.  They could not, however, get the last two runs across, and fell 5-3.

Sam Segiel led the bats with 2 hits and an RBI, while Colleen Kuplast and Sydney McMullen also recorded RBI's.  Kristen Popp pitched all 6 innings, giving up the 5 runs on 6 hits. She struck out 2 and walked 2.

Game 2 was not as closely contested, as Greater Allegheny mustered just 4 hits- eventually falling 8-0.  Sam Segiel went 1-3, with Kristen Popp pitching the 4 innings.

The conference sweep drops Greater Allegheny's record to 1-9 overall and 1-5 in the PSUAC.  They will look to turn things around on Sunday, when they host Penn State Hazleton for a 12 PM double-header.
