New Kensington, Pa. - Through the first set of Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) contests, the Penn State Greater Allegheny women's softball team traveled to Penn State New Kensington, Friday night, to drop game one 8-3 before taking an 11-1 slide to end the evening.
Freshman third baseman Raeann Sleith (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) doubled to left field to bring home freshman second baseman Michaela Henderson (Bowie, Md./Bullis School), 1-0 GA.
Three runs in the bottom of the inning gave New Kensington the early advantage, 3-1.
Freshman catcher Sydney Fritchman (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton) singled to score another Henderson run alongside Sleith, 3-3 tie.
A total of five runs in the fifth and sixth inning resulted in an 8-3 New Kensington triumph.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Savannah Simm (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) saw 32 batters over six innings, sitting down three on strike-out.
Fritchman went 2-of-3 with two RBI while Sleith hit 2-of-4 with one run.
Game two was a slow start as New Kensington marked the first run in the bottom of the fourth.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Lacie Lautner (Pleasant Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) doubled into left field to score Henderson and freshman Hailey Maksin. Sleith followed her up with a double of her own to score Lautner, 3-1. Freshman right-fielder Shalonda Eley (Prosper, Texas/Prosper) nabbed a sacrifice fly to left to score Bendick, 4-1.
The top of the seventh brought a hit-by-pitch on Eley to force Lautner to score. Fritchman singled to the third baseman to score Bendick and continue the Lion stride. Maksin walked to score Eley before Henderson reached first on an error, pushing Fritchman to score, 8-1.
Both Lautner and Bendick singled on hits to the outfield to score both Simm and Maksin, 10-1. The final run of the contest came from Henderson as Sleith walked her home, 11-1 Greater Allegheny.
Lautner posted her second win for the Lions on the bump as she faced 26 batters over seven innings, sitting down ten on strike-outs and allowing just four hits. The righty also hit 2-for-4 with three runs batted in alongside two runs scored herself. Bendick posted 3-of-4 in game two with two runs and an RBI. Sleith noted 2-of-3 with two RBI.
Greater Allegheny (2-4, 1-1 PSUAC) looks onward to Saturday for another double-header with Penn State New Kensington, this time on Greater Allegheny turf.
