Softball Gets Back on Track with Sweep of Doubleheader

DuBois, PA. – After going through a five-game losing streak in which they dropped all four of their games against PSU-Beaver, the Penn State Greater Allegheny Softball Team (11-8, 9-5) got back on track sweeping PSU-DuBois (3-13-1, 3-11-1) in doubleheader action on Wednesday winning both games 17-1. The offense exploded after being silenced in the five games prior to get PSUGA back in the win column and bring plenty of support for their starting pitchers.

Game one saw Tara Love (Chandler, AZ./Campo Verde HS) take the mound and dazzle over four innings of work giving up just the one run on six hits. She pitched with a lead for the entire game as her team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first and never looked back from there.

The second inning was the one where PSUGA was able to put the ball game away scoring nine runs and taking a 12-1 lead after two innings of play. They would go on to add two runs in the third and three in the fourth to put the fifteen-run rule in effect and PSUGA would grab the 17-1 win in four innings in game one.

Morgan Greely (Roulette, PA./Port Allegheny HS) had her best game of the season finishing 2-4 with three RBI while Lacie Lautner (Pleasant Hills, PA./Thomas Jefferson) continued her success going 2-2 with two RBI and three runs scored. Love, who entered play hitting .600 (6-15) in her last five games, finished 3-4 driving in four runs in the victory. PSUGA would look to start a new winning streak in game two of the doubleheader as they went for the sweep of the doubleheader.

Their offense would show up to play once again as they picked up yet another 17-1 victory, this time in five innings of play. Lautner was on the hill for game two and gave up just one run through five innings of work on four hits while striking out five. The two teams were tied at one after an inning of play and PSUGA would jump out to a 3-1 lead after three innings. Their big inning came in the top of the fourth when they put up 10 runs and increased the lead to 13-1 before finishing the game with three runs in the top of the fifth to implement the fifteen-run rule.

Rachel Able (Pataskala, OH/Watkins Memoial High) had her best game of her career going 4-5 with three RBI and four runs scored and Maddie Kyle (Carnegie, PA./Calrynton) finished 1-4 with three RBI in the win.

PSUGA now sits at 9-5 in conference play and are sitting in third place in the Penn State University Athletic Conference West Division Standings. They hold the final playoff spot and have a two-game lead over PSU-Mont Alto coming down to the final six games of the season. They could clinch their first playoff spot since 2013 with two wins in their last six games of the season.

They are back in action on Friday when they travel to take on PSU-New Kensington at 2 p.m. in doubleheader action. They will then finish the four-game series with another doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m.
