Monaca, PA. - The Penn State Greater Allegheny Softball team (0-16, 0-16) couldn't generate much offense in their series finale with Penn State Beaver (25-9) on Saturday falling by scores of 10-1 and 8-0. While the offense struggled, pitching found a way to slow down a potent Beaver offense but the deficits were just too much to overcome.
Game one saw Beaver explode in the first two innings of play to get out toti a big lead. After scoring three runs in the first they came back with seven runs in the second to get out to a 10-0 lead. However, Savanna Simm (West Mifflin, PA./West Mifflin HS) settled down after that throwing up back-to-back scoreless innings.
PSUGA scored their lone run in the top of the fourth. After a leadoff double by Alyssa Guzzie (Pittsburgh, PA./Fox Chapel HS). The next two batters would be rerired be retired before Tara Love (Chandler, AZ./Camp Verde HS) lined and RBI double to left scoring Guzzie and making it a 10-1 ball game.
PSUGA would collect just two more hits on the day from Simm and Haley Snyder (Connelsville, PA./Connelsville HS) before falling by the 10-1 score. Love led the way going 1-2 with an RBI while Simm turned in her best game of the season going 4.0 innings allowing 10 runs, eight earned, on nine hits while walking four batters.
Game two didn't go much better for the offense as they only collected two hits in what would be an 8-0 shutout loss to end the series. A one out double by Guzzie in the top of the first and a leadoff triple from Snyder in the third accounted for the only two hits on the day.
Love got the start and oirched well holding Beaver to single digits in the game. She gave up one run in every inning except the third when Beaver scored four runs to put the game away. She finished the day going 4.2 innings giving up seven runs, six earned, on 14 hits. It was one of her best starts of the season as the season is coming to a close.
With one series to go, PSUGA is looking to finish out the season strong as they take on Penn State New Kensington. With the PSUAC tournament starting in two weeks, PSUGA will try to play spoiler and change the landscape of the playoffs.
First pitch for Friday's series opener against New Kensington is scheduled for 2 p.m. with game two following at 4 p.m. The games will be played at No-Offswason sports in Tarentum, PA.
