McKeesport, Pa- The Penn State Greater Allegheny women's basketball team despairingly came to an overtime defeat as their number one ranked conference foe, Penn State Fayette, came to Wunderley Gymnasium Monday night, 90-85.
Despite the loss, sophomore guard Taylor Fulton (West Mifflin, PA/West Mifflin) was able to net an astonishing 41 points to add to the Greater Allegheny tally. Sophomore forward Christina Floyd (Philadelphia, PA/Sts. Neumann-Gorett) also boarded a staggering 27 rebounds. Both achievements for the athletes were records for the women's program. Another notable milestone comes from Penn State Fayette's senior guard Kasey Ruble, as she surpassed the 1,000-career point milestone.
The match-up of the two teams were evenly contested the entire game. Fayette took the first half by only three. In the game, GA managed to deposit 32 points on second chance efforts, 24 of them coming in the second half.
At one point in the second half, Fayette's lead had swelled to fourteen. Tallies added from Fulton, sophomore guard Nakayla Layne (Pittsburgh, PA/Taylor Allderdice) and junior guard Andrea Brown (Coraopolis, PA/Cornell) just seemed not enough as the women were down seven with less than two minutes to play. Layne scored the next four points. Fulton laid the tying three-pointer on the Roaring Lions as the seconds wound down to four, sending the game into overtime.
Even with the fans helping them along, their aspirations were just not enough as penalties wound Greater Allegheny down to four players on the court. Free-throws were the demise of their exciting comeback, leaving the Penn State Greater Allegheny women's basketball team to fall to 11-9, 6-5 PSUAC.
Greater Allegheny travels to Carlow University for a non-conference contest, Wednesday evening. Tip-off is set to for 7:30 p.m.
