Women's Basketball Drop to Carlow in a Non-Conference Match

McKeesport, Pa. - The Penn State Greater Allegheny women's basketball team squared off with Carlow University, Tuesday night, as GA got the short-end of the stick, 90-70.

Junior power forward Christina Floyd (Philadelphia, Pa./Saints Neumann-Goretti) was the first to answer, as Greater Allegheny won the tip-off. Carlow managed seven straight before junior guard Nakayla Layne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) and freshman forward Aaquila Youngblood (Pittsburgh, Pa./Obama Academy) notched blue and white tallies on the board. Floyd added eight points through three minutes before senior point guard Taylor Fulton (Duquesne, Pa./West Mifflin) polished off a trey to bring Greater Allegheny ahead of Carlow, 19-12.

Freshman forward Tenisha Gibson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Obama Academy) put up six points as freshman guard Tra-Esha Carswell (Homestead, Pa./Steel Valley) added a lay-up. Youngblood's lay-up continued GA's lead , 30-26, with six minutes to play before the half. Carlow's offense held the team to just four points through the final minutes, as Carlow gained a swell on the Lions, 43-34.

Junior guard Shelby Bendick (White Oak, Pa./McKeesport Area) opened up the second half scoring drive by contributing a lay-up. Floyd matched Bendick's lay-up before Youngblood added three, Greater Allegheny still trailing 45-41. Carlow continued to fight on as Floyd banked four. Layne and Bendick put up points before Fulton hammered another three-pointer. Youngblood and Gibson combined efforts to increase Greater Allegheny's mark seven as Fulton completed both free-throws attempted. Youngblood made a lay-up to bring the non-conference match-up to 72-63, Carlow. Floyd, Carswell and Fulton added seven more through the final six minutes of play, as Carlow gained headway. Greater Allegheny saw defeat after forty minutes of regulation, 90-70.

Floyd completed 60% (9-of-15) of her shots taken from the floor, contributing 19 points and pulling down 13 rebounds to assist to the final mark. Youngblood added 3-3 from the free-throw line, as the freshman bucketed 15 points and gained eight boards. Alongside Fulton's 13 points toward the Greater Allegheny score, the senior dished out 17 assists and pulled down six boards. Gibson had a solid run for Greater Allegheny, as she made 80% (4-of-5) of her shots taken from the floor, increasing the score nine points.

As a team, Greater Allegheny completed 41.7% (30-of-72) of their shots attempted from the floor alongside their 53.3% (8-of-15) of their free-throws. The team out-rebounded Carlow, 43-32, and turned 15 points in off of 19 Carlow turnovers. The team managed to post 44 points in the paint to lift the GA tally.

The team looks to brush off this loss, Friday, as Greater Allegheny hosts Penn State Schyulkill for a Penn State University Athletic Conference match-up. The double-header with the men is scheduled with the women appearing first at 6 p.m.
