Greater Allegheny Women's Basketball Swipes 58-47 Victory from DuBois

DuBois, Pa. - The Penn State Greater Allegheny women's basketball team went on the road, Wednesday night, for a Penn State University Athletic Conference match-up at Penn State DuBois, as Greater Allegheny superseded DuBois, 58-47.

Freshman guard Mandi Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) was the first to get on the board to start the PSUAC match with two completed foul shots. Senior power forward Christina Floyd (Philadelphia, Pa./Sts. Neumann-Goretti) downed a jumper to put GA ahead four not even a minute into the contest. Floyd answered with back-to-back jumpers before M. Johnston downed a jumper herself, GA now ahead 12-0.

Floyd dumped on a jumper along with two free-throws to contribute to the 15-3 gain over DuBois just eight minutes into the game. Freshman guard Tori Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) hammered down a three-pointer before freshman forward Morgan McCallister (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) made a jumper, GA now up 21-10.

DuBois made some ground back as the clock wound down to five minutes remaining in the first half. Junior guard Nakayla Layne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) dropped a jumper as M. Johnston added a free-throw. Sophomore guard Tra-Esha Carswell (Homestead, Pa./Steel Valley) rode out the scoring drive for the first half for Greater Allegheny with two completed jumpers, Greater Allegheny leading 28-21.

M. Johnston came out hot in the second half, as the guard hammered a three-pointer, a jumper and two foul shots as freshman guard Teona Cash (McKeesport, Pa./Woodland Hills) noted a jumper, Greater Allegheny now out-stretching DuBois, 37-21.

Layne, Cash and M. Johnston put down jumpers to continue Greater Allegheny's run on the PSUAC foe. With six minutes left to play through regulation, Layne, Floyd and M. Johnston dumped on points to advance GA, 50-37. M. Johnston hammered down a three-pointer before a jumper to continue the steamroll. Floyd rode out the end contributing three free-throws to the final Greater Allegheny tally, GA overtaking DuBois 58-47.

M. Johnston finished the game with 22 points, three rebounds and three assists as the freshman knocked down 75% (6-of-8) of her shots taken from the foul line. Floyd banked 17 points with twelve rebounds. four steals and a block. Layne pulled down seven boards with six points, three steals and an assist.

As a team, Greater Allegheny shot 55% (11-of-20) from the free-throw line while the Lions went on to out-rebound the home team, 53-40. Greater Allegheny dished out 22 points on second chance alongside nine points off of turnovers.

Greater Allegheny (5-12, 3-5 PSUAC) takes a few day break before they host a huge Penn State University Athletic Conference weekend at Wunderley Gymnasium. On Saturday, Penn State Schyulkill comes to town for a double-header with both the men and women. The women are set to tip-off at 2:30 p.m.
