Lady Lion Hoopers Stride Past Pitt-Titusville, 95-61

Titusville, Pa. - With four double-digit contributors, including a double-double from freshman forward Andrea Burroughs (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle), the Penn State Greater Allegheny women's basketball team went on to conquer Pitt-Titusville, Wednesday evening, by a score of 95-61.

Titusville was first on the board with two as junior guard Jess Manfredi (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Serra Catholic) tied it up with a layup. Sophomore guard Mandi Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) continued the back-and-forth play with a layup as Titusville answered. Manfredi dropped a trio of consecutive three-pointers to elevate the visiting team up and over Titusville, 13-9. Burroughs put down a layup before sophomore guard Tori Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) matched her, 17-9 GA.

The home team progressed through the final minutes of the first quarter, while Manfredi and T. Johnston continued to hack away from beyond the arc, 23-17. Titusville managed a few more points until T. Johnston put down a good jumper, 25-19 GA heading into the second quarter.

Burroughs was the first on the board in the next set of ten minutes with a good layup as T. Johnston mirrored her, 29-21. Burroughs put down another layup before Manfredi drained another three, 34-21 Greater Allegheny. Freshman guard Brianna Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./University Prep) slashed a jumper with five minutes left until half before M. Johnston added two in the form of a layup. Burroughs posted another layup while M. Johnston and Manfredi continued to shoot away.

Freshman guard Chelsy Ware (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) denoted a good jumper, putting GA ahead 48-30. M. Johnston continued the Lion stride with a layup before Manfredi noted the last point of the half, Greater Allegheny leading 51-30.

M. Johnston answered in the new half with a layup while Ware added a free-throw. T. Johnston and Williams put up jumpers before Williams laid on a layup, 60-39. Sophomore guard Laura Vazquez Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Maria Montessori) added a jumper before M. Johnston downed a layup and one, 65-41 Greater Allegheny.

T. Johnston drained a three-pointer before Ware added a layup and Burroughs made a jumper. M. Johnston and Manfredi put up free-throw points before M. Johnston ended the third quarter with a layup and one, Lions leading 77-51.

All five of the GA Lions answered in the start of the fourth quarter, contributing to the GA stride. M. Johnston rang a pair of layups with five minutes to play. Burroughs put up a layup before T. Johnston dropped the final points of the contest, Greater Allegheny dominating Pitt-Titusville, 95-61.

With a stand-out 20 point first half, Manfredi finished the evening with 23 points, two boards, an assist and a steal all the while shooting 50% from the floor (8-for-16), behind the arc (5-10) and the free-throw line (2-for-4). Burroughs dropped her first career double-double, as the forward pulled down 24 rebounds while downing 16 points. M. Johnston denoted 23 points while contributing eight boards, eight assists and five steals. T. Johnston added 16 points with nine rebounds and six assists. 

Seven of the Greater Allegheny Lions contributed to the product tonight. As a team, GA out-rebounded Pitt-Titusville 68-43 while noting 36 points on turnovers as the Lions forced 34 turnovers. GA put up 52 points in the paint while adding 27 points on second-chance.

The Greater Allegheny Lions (2-3) will host the Community College of Beaver County, Wednesday evening. The lone game will tip-off at 7 p.m.
