Three Double-Digit Contributors Elevate GA Women's Hoops to First PSUAC Win

McKeesport, Pa. - With three double-digit scorers, the Penn State Greater Allegheny women's basketball team drained Penn State York, 63-42, for their first Penn State University Athletic Conference victory of the 2015-16 season.

Freshman forward Tijuanna Burke (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) was the first on the board for GA as freshman forward Andrea Burroughs (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) mirrored her with a layup, 4-2 GA just three minutes into the game.

Junior guard Tra-Esha Carswell (Homestead, Pa./Steel Valley) laid on points in the paint before sophomore guard Mandi Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) made a layup and one. Sophomore guard Tori Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) drained a three-pointer to extend the Greater Allegheny lead to 12-2 with just over five minutes of action recorded.

Carswell and M. Johnston added two points a piece before T. Johnston dropped a trey on York, 19-7 GA. Burke made a jumper to move the home team to 21-9 over York after the first quarter.

T. Johnston came out of the break and added a three points outside the arc. Freshman forward Andrea Burroughs (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) and Carswell both finished lay-ups before T. Johnson dropped another three-pointer, 31-13. Burke made two from the free-throw line before T. Johnston made a jumper to end the half, GA leading 35-20.

Burke put up three points to start the new half as Burroughs and M. Johnston both laid on points in the paint. Junior guard Jess Manfredi (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Serra Catholic) snapped with a layup, a three-pointer and a free throw as the third quarter wrapped up in Greater Allegheny's favor, 50-29.

T. Johnston put up a layup and a free-throw as M. Johnston deposited a pair of three-point shots to wind the clock down to a minute left in regulation play. Burke tallied the final four points of the game, pushing Greater Allegheny to their first PSUAC triumph of the year.

Burke posted her second double-double of the season, with 18 rebounds and 15 points, while depositing 50% (5-of-10) of her shots from the floor and 83.3% (5-of-6) of her shots from the free-throw line. T. Johnston laid on 17 points with four steals, three boards and three assists. M. Johnston added 13 points with six assists, five boards and two steals.

As a team, Greater Allegheny out-rebounded York 62-37 while taking the largest lead of the game by 23 points. The women put up 66.7% (8-of-12) of their shots from the free-throw line and 24 buckets from the floor. 30 points were drained in the paint while 30 points were earned on second-chance.

Greater Allegheny (4-9, 1-2 PSUAC) takes a break from PSUAC action and hosts Southern State Community College on Saturday afternoon. The women are set to tip-off at 2 p.m.
