Lemont Furnace, Pa. - Through four quarters, the Penn State Greater Allegheny women's basketball dropped a slow Penn State University Athletic Conference match against Penn State Fayette, Wednesday night, 81-39.
Sophomore guard Mandi Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) was the first on the board with a two points as junior guard Jess Manfredi (Thomas Jefferson, Pa./Serra Catholic) knocked down one from the foul line. Junior guard Tra-Esha Carswell (Homestead, Pa./Steel Valley) laid on a fast break layup to put up just five points to the Fayette 19 through the first quarter.
Manfredi denoted four points while M. Johnston added a layup. Freshman forward Andrea Burroughs (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) made a jumper before M. Johnston and Manfredi put down one from the foul line each, GA trailing Fayette 41-15 at halftime.
Sophomore guard Tori Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) came out in the third with a three-pointer as Manfredi added four and the Johnston sisters put up two a piece. Manfredi drained a trey herself to end the third quarter, 64-29 Fayette.
T. Johnston added a fast break layup in the fourth quarter to put the Lions on the board. Manfredi put up two more points as Burroughs put up a layup herself, 79-35 Roaring Lions with less than two minutes to go. Carswell surplused the Lions with two made from the free-throw line as Manfredi bucketed a layup to end the Greater Allegheny scoring drive.
Manfredi dropped a team-high 15 points with eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Burroughs pulled down 14 boards with four points, an assist and a block. T. Johnston had nine points while Carswell posted eight rebounds.
As a team, Greater Allegheny was out-rebounded 68-39 contributing to the demise. The Lions shot 38.5% (5-of-13) from the free-throw line while dropping 22 points in the paint and 11 points off of turnovers.
The Lions (5-10, 1-4 PSUAC) will take a break before the head on a Penn State University Athletic Conference weekend trip. Saturday brings a contest against Lehigh Valley at Stabler Arena in Lehigh University. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
