Lady Lion Women's Basketball Blinded by Clarion, 117-42

Clarion, Pa. - The Penn State Greater Allegheny women's basketball team fell to NCAA Division II Clarion University, Wednesday night, by a staggering margin of 117-42.

Sophomore forward Andrea Burroughs (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) put up the first points for Greater Allegheny in the paint before junior guard Mandi Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) dropped a three-pointer. Senior guard Tra-Esha Carswell (Homestead, Pa./Steel Valley) managed a layup to finish the first quarter in Clarion's favor, 32-7.

Senior guard Jess Manfredi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Serra Catholic) laid on points in the paint before junior forward Shakeria Carter (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh CAPA) dropped a jumper, 41-11 home team. Manfredi noted a layup as freshman guard Ronnie Upsher (Pittsburgh, Pa./McKeesport) added a three-pointer to finish the first half, 58-16.

Johnston and Upsher put up two points a piece before Carswell downed a jumper and one, 85-23. Manfredi, Carswell and Carter added points from the foul line as Johnston dropped a layup to send the two teams into the final quarter of action, Clarion in front 99-31.

Johnston and Upsher continued from the foul line before Upsher surged with a layup and a three-pointer. Manfredi finished out the scoring drive for Greater Allegheny with a pair of free-throws, Clarion dominating 117-42.

The 117 points scored against the Lions represented the fifth-most in a single game in program history and the most since Clarion scored 138 points against Bethany on Nov. 21, 1992.

Upsher put up 12 points as Burroughs pulled down nine boards with two points. Johnston posted nine points with five rebounds, two assists a steal and a block.

As a team, Greater Allegheny got out-rebounded 53-24 as the Lions coughed up the ball 25 times to the Golden Eagles six.

Greater Allegheny (2-4, 0-1 PSUAC) hosts a Penn State University Athletic Conference weekend, as Penn State Schuylkill comes to Wunderley Gymnasium, Friday night, for a 6 p.m. tip-off. Saturday brings Penn State Hazleton for a 1 p.m start time.
