GA Women's Hoops Drops to Carlow, 78-50

Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Penn State Greater Allegheny women's basketball team fell to USCAA opponent, Carlow, Tuesday night, by a margin of 78-50.

Freshman guard Ronnie Upsher (Pittsburgh, Pa./McKeesport) was first for GA to answer with a three-pointer as Carlow zipped up to a 15-3 lead in just six minutes of action. Senior guard Jess Manfredi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Serra Catholic) and Upsher both downed layups as Manfredi added a free-throw point, 25-8 Carlow after the first quarter of action.

Freshman guard Huntur Lear and Manfredi both put down jumpers to start the second quarter before junior guard Mandi Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) put up points from the foul line. Upsher continued with six straight points, sending the two teams into halftime with Carlow in front, 36-20.

Upsher and Johnston slashed points in the paint as senior guard Tra-Esha Carswell (Homestead, Pa./Steel Valley) put up four points. Johnston added the final eight points of the third quarter to send the ladies into the final ten minutes of action, 62-36 home team. 

Sophomore forward Andrea Burroughs (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) noted a jumper before Manfredi snapped with four points in the paint and a three-pointer, 71-45. Johnston slashed two from the foul line before Carswell finished off the scoring drive with a jumper and one, ending the game 78-50, Carlow.

Johnston came off the bench with 14 points, four assists, three boards and three steals as Upsher completed 50% (5-of-10) from the floor with 13 points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists. Manfredi noted 12 points with four steals, three rebounds and an assist while Carswell finished 75% (3-of-4) from the floor with seven points and two steals.

As a team, Greater Allegheny was out-rebounded 62-22 as the team shot 35.8% (19-of-53) from the floor and 52.7% (9-of-17) from the foul line. The Lions added 16 points in the paint with 15 points on turnovers; each team giving up the ball 24 times.

Greater Allegheny (3-6, 1-2 PSUAC) hosts NCAA Division III Grove City, Wednesday evening, for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
