McKeesport, Pa. - Through four quarters of Penn State University Athletic Conference action, the Penn State Greater Allegheny women's basketball team fell to Penn State Brandywine, Saturday afternoon, by the margin of 67-41.
Freshman forward Justice Mitchell (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) was the first to answer in the game with a jumper as freshman guard Ronnie Upsher (Pittsburgh, Pa./McKeesport) placed two points of her own. Junior guard Mandi Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) hammered down a three-pointer to bring the first quarter to a Brandywine advantage, 15-7.
Freshman guard Jayla Ellis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) laid down a nice jumper in the paint as Upsher and Mitchell continued from the paint, Mitchell netting six. The two teams were sent into halftime with Brandywine leading, 33-17.
Upsher was the only oneto answer in the second half with a good pair of jumpers, 57-21 Brandywine.
Ellis completed both free-throws to begin the fourth quarter as she marked a jumper in the paint, 57-25 with eight left to play. Mitchell and Johnston laid down points in the paint to continue Greater Allegheny's work back to the away team.
Johnston made the next four points as the clock wound down. Upsher put down two from the foul line, Brandywine in front 67-41
Upsher noted a double-double in the contest with 12 points and 12 boards along with three steals, three blocks and two assists. Mitchell posted 14 points with eight rebounds while Burroughs pulled down ten rebounds, four blocks and two steals. Johnston added nine points with four rebounds, four assists and two steals while Ellis knocked down six with four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.
As a team, Greater Allegheny was out-rebounded 57-40 while the women netted 46.7% (7-of-15) from the foul line and 17 total buckets from the floor. The Lions added 30 points in the paint, ten points off turnovers and four points off fastbreak.
Greater Allegheny (4-10, 2-6 PSUAC) takes a break before hosting Penn State Fayette, Tuesday night, in another Penn State University Athletic Conference match-up. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
