McKeesport, Pa. – After having a promising weekend against two top Penn State University Athletic Conference opponents, the Penn State Greater Allegheny Women’s Basketball Team (0-13, 0-6) looks to keep it going when they take on Penn State Fayette (3-9, 2-4) on Tuesday. Despite losing both games over the weekend, there were a lot of positives to take away from those games.
They saw two players have break out games when Tina Clybourn (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brashear) scored a season high 15 points in Friday’s game vs. PSU-Lehigh Valley and Alex Hall (Washington, D.C./Bell HS) scored 15 against PSU-Brandywine on Saturday. PSUGA has been relying on Jayla Ellis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) to carry the offense all season long, and seeing Clybourn and Hall step up allows them to be able to move the ball and have confidence in their scorers.
On Saturday, they played one of their best games of the season against PSUAC powerhouse Penn State Brandywine. They shot a season best 40% from the floor and 57.1% from beyond the arc. Head Coach Chrissy French wanted her girls to focus on their play on the court rather then the score and they did just that over the weekend and it paid off.
However, they still were not able to pick up the elusive first win of the season, but they get a chance to do just that against Penn state Fayette. Some of their best offensive production came in the second half of the game against PSU-Brandywine when they put up 39 points, the most they have scored in any half all season long. They will try to keep it going against a Penn State Fayette team that has struggled to score points this season.
Fayette is coming off of a 77-57 loss at the hands of Penn State Mont Alto on Sautrday. Offensive leader Hayley Moreland put up 22 points in the game, but after falling behind 39-30 at halftime, they didn’t have enough left in the tank to complete the comeback. Fayette is averaging 59.0 PPG this season, good for 7th in the PSUAC, with they leader Moreland averaging 18.3 PPG.
PSU-Fayette has had the upper hand in this matchup dating back to the 2011/2012 season with a record of 10-3 against PSUGA. However, the two teams split the season series last year with the home team coming out victorious in both contests. Ellis scored 21 points between the two games including a 16-point effort in the 91-65 loss on January 31st 2017.
Tip-off for Tuesday’s game is scheduled for 6 p.m. as part of a men’s and women’s doubleheader. Tuesday’s game is the final road game of the season for the Women’s Basketball team as they will play their final eight games of the year at home.
