McKeesport, Pa. – Fresh off their first win of the 2017/2018 season, the Penn State Greater Allegheny Women’s Basketball Team (1-13, 1-6) is back on the court when they take on Penn State Mont Alto (4-11, 1-5) on Friday at 6 p.m. It will be the ladies first home game since way back on Novemebr 8th against Point Park.
PSUGA has been worrying about their on-court performance rather then the scoreboard this season but, on Tuesday, they got to celebrate the scoreboard picking up their first win of the season over PSU-Fayette 52-50. The ladies had their offense working and went into the second half leading for the first time all season. It came down to the wire as PSU-Fayette put up a three-pointer with four seconds remaining, but it fell short and PSUGA was able to hold on.
PSUGA has been getting contributions all-around so far in the second half, but none bigger then the emergence of Tina Clybourn (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brashear) as an offensive weapon. Clybourn scored 15 points in Tuesday’s contest marking the second time in the last three games that she has been in double digits. After averaging just 4.8 points per game in the first half, Clybourn has turned it on in the second half averaging 12 PPG in the first three games.
The debut of Lexus Santiago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) has also provided a spark giving PSUGA another body to help give some girls some much needed rest. Santiago has averaged 5.0 PPG in her first three games and has collected 10 rebounds. Alex Hall (Washington, D.C./Bell HS) is another girl stepping up averaging 10.7 PPG in the second half.
PSU-Mont Alto comes into this one struggling having lost eight of their last nine games including falling to Valley Forge their last time out 80-74. Charity Miller led the team with 17 points and has been the offensive leader for Mont Alto all season long. Miller is averaging 16.1 PPG to lead her team and is only one of two players for Mont Alto to average double digit points per game.
PSUGA has had the upper hand in the matchup over the years with a record of 5-2 against PSU-Mont Alto, however, they lost last seasons matchup at Mont Alto 64-54. PSUGA is looking to take this season’s game after picking up their last win against Mont Alto in the 2015/2016 season.
Tip-off for Friday night’s game is scheduled for 6 p.m. as game one of a men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader. Come out and celebrate with us as we unveil the new renovations to Wunderly Gymnasium prior to the game.
