McKeesport, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Women’s Basketball Team (1-15, 1-8) have found individual success on the court, but it hasn’t been able to translate into many wins on the scoreboard. They will try to keep building off of these individual successes when they battle Carlow (5-12, 2-8) on Wednesday.
After picking up their first win of the season against Penn State Fayette on the 23rd, PSUGA dropped back-to-back games over the weekend falling to PSU-Mont Alto 61-53 and to PSU-York 64-42 on Saturday. Despite the loses, there still were positives to take away from the weekend matchups.
Alex Hall (Washington, D.C./Bell HS) had her best weekend of the season in terms of scoring. She started on Friday tying a career high scoring 12 points and followed that up by setting a new career high on Saturday scoring 17 points. Hall, when healthy, has been a force to be reckoned with in the PSUGA lineup and provides a spark both offensively and defensively. She is now averaging 11.5 points per game through her first eight games, good for second on the team behind Jayla Ellis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills).
Another player who has stepped up is Lexus Santiago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy). After missing the entire first half of the season with an injury, she has come back and contributed in the starting lineup. She has started the last three games and scored eight and seven points respectively over the weekend. She also serves as a vocal leader on the court helping to call out plays and get her team motivated.
With all the success by individual players, PSUGA will look to put it all together when they face off against a Carlow team that has won three of their last five games coming into play on Tuesday night. They took on Asbury University on Saturday and walked away with a 61-51 win. Emma Stille lead Carlow with 18 points and was one of three Celtic players to finish in double-digits on the day.
These two teams have met eight times since the 2011/2012 season and Carlow has won every matchup over that time frame. Last year’s contest ended up in a 78-50 loss at Carlow University. Andrea Burroughs (New Rochelle, Ny./New Rochelle) is the only current PSUGA player on the team from last season’s matchup and she scored two points while collecting six rebounds. Stille led Carlow with 21 points in the contest and 16 rebounds to earn a double-double.
