Ellis Continues Offensive Success in Conference Loss

Monaca, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Women’s Basketball Team (0-7, 0-1) were led offensively on Tuesday by sophomore Jayla Ellis’s (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) 19-point effort, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to Penn State Beaver (1-5, 1-0) 94-37. With the 19 points in the game, Jayla Ellis has now scored in double digits in every single game this season.

Early on, it was Penn State Beaver that took control as they jumped out to a quick 11-7 lead. PSUGA would fight back to keep it close at the end of the first quarter as they cut the lead to eight. However, Penn State Beaver would find their offensive groove in the second quarter outscoring PSUGA 27-7 to take a commanding 54-24 lead into the locker room.

Jayla Ellis would jump start the offense in the third quarter as she got PSUGA out to a 4-0 run to start things, but it didn’t take long for Beaver to respond and they took it from there. They outscored PSUGA 40-15 in the second half to claim the victory and pick up their first conference win of the season.

Jayla Ellis led the team with 19 points and continues to be a bright spot this season on the offensive side of the ball. She joined the Women’s Basketball Team during the second semester a year ago and has been a fixture on the offensive side of the ball ever since. Ellis was one of two PSUGA players to end in double digits as Brandy Taylor (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) finished the day with 10 points as well.

Taylor finished the day just one rebound short of collecting her first double-double of the season finishing with nine to lead the team and was also able to collect a team high three assists in the game.

PSUGA continues to look at the positives from each game despite the score at the end of the day. However, they will be getting some reinforcements in the next couple of weeks. Alex Hall (Washington, D.C./Bell HS) and Andrea Burroughs (New Rochelle, Ny./New Rochelle), who have missed some time over the last couple of games, will return to the lineup and Lexus Santiago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) is scheduled to make her PSUGA debut sometime next week as well.

PSUGA continues their stretch of eight straight road games with two contests this weekend as they continue PSUAC Conference play. It starts on Friday when they battle Penn State Schuylkill at 6 p.m. and ends on Saturday when they face Penn State Hazleton at 1 p.m.
