Schuylkill Haven, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Women’s Basketball Team (0-8, 0-2) saw the return of Junior Andrea Burroughs (New Rochelle, Ny./New Rochelle) to the starting lineup, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to Penn State Schuylkill (4-2, 1-0) 62-39. Schuylkill used an early offensive attack to put PSUGA away and secure the victory.
PSU-Schuylkill went on a 6-0 run to start the contest before Kiya Blair (Pittsburgh, Pa./Carrick HS) got PSUGA on the board. PSUGA was only able to put up six points in each of the first two quarters of play and went into halftime down 25-12. In the second half, PSUGA was able to create more offense as they cut the lead to 31-22 with 6:22 left in the third quarter. However, Schuylkill once again found their shot putting up 23 points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Kiya Blair scored a career high 12 points in the contest making the most of her opportunity in the starting lineup. Blair is one of the many first year players on this year’s team and she continues to improve every game. To go along with her season high day in points, Blair was able to grab four rebounds on the day to tie for third on the team.
Jayla Ellis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) continued her offensive dominance as she also scored 12 points in the contest. She has been carrying the offense all season long and now has been in double digits in all eight games this season. Andrea Burroughs was back to her normal ways as she led the team with eight rebounds and Brandy Taylor (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) led the team with four assists.
PSUGA is still looking for their first win of the season, but they are starting to see some improvements in their game. Their shooting improved from the PSU-Beaver game as they went 15-60 (25%) from the floor and 9-17 (52.9%) from the free throw line. Head Coach Chrissy French wants her girls to keep focusing on the way they played rather then the final score so that they can continue to grow every single game.
The women will have a quick turn around as they are right back in action tomorrow afternoon when they face off against Penn State Hazleton at 1 p.m. to wrap up their weekend PSUAC Conference Doubleheader.
