Women’s Basketball Wraps up First Half with Loss to DuBois

DuBois, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Women’s Basketball Team (0-11, 0-4) wrapped up the first half of their 2017/18 season on Friday when they fell to Penn State DuBois (7-2, 3-1) 74-46. PSUGA once again kept it close early on, but in the end just didn’t have enough in the tank to finish out the game.

DuBois took control early as Melody Young made a two pointer to get them out to an early 2-0 lead. That lead would never change hands through the course of the ballgame despite it still being close after one quarter of play as PSUGA trailed 21-14. However, after being outscored 19-6 in the second quarter, they went into the locker room with a lot of work to do.

They would be able to find their offense in the second half scoring 11 points in the third quarter and a game high 15 points in the fourth quarter, but DuBois continued to pour it on offensively to seal the victory. Jayla Ellis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) was on fire during the second half putting up 12 of her team leading 18 points in the game and continues to shine on the court despite what the team’s record might say.

Ellis was one of three PSUGA players on the day to finish in double digits as Brandy Taylor (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) put up 15 points and Tina Clybourn (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brashear HS) put up a career high 10 points in the victory. Clybourn had a great high school career leading Brashear HS in scoring her senior season, but on Friday she broke out for the first time in her PSUGA career and looks to build off of it moving forward.

Andrea Burroughs (New Rochelle, Ny./New Rochelle) continues to lead PSUGA in the rebound category picking up six on the day. Burroughs leads the team with 9.4 rebounds per game and has led the team in rebounds in every game except for the couple that she missed this season. Brandy Taylor continues to lead the team in assists picking up two on the day.

The PSUGA women have now wrapped up their first half of the season and, despite the record, have shown some positives to build off of in the second half. Jayla Ellis has stepped up as a key offensive piece and Brandy Taylor has emerged as an offensive weapon as well. They keep improving on their shooting percentage and the extended break will give them a chance to recharge for the second half.

The next time PSUGA will take the court will be on January 12th 2018 in the Wunderly Gymnasium when they take on Penn State Wilkes-Barre at 6 p.m. From all of us here at Penn State Greater Allegheny we wish you a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
