Brandy Taylor’s Big Day Leads to PSUGA Victory

McKeesport, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Women’s Basketball team (3-18, 3-10) picked up their third win of the season on Saturday defeating Penn State Worthington Scranton (0-0, 0-0) 68-50. Brandy Taylor (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) led the way with a career high 22 points, including six three-pointers in the win.

PSUGA opened up the game scoring the first nine points of the night before Worthington Scranton got on the board. However, Worthington Scranton was able to claw back into the game scoring 12 of the next 14 points to take the lead after one 13-11. Tina Clybourn (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brashear) was hitting shots early on scoring four of her teams 11 first half points.

It would be defense that ruled the second quarter as PSUGA was able to hold Worthington Scranton to just eight points in the quarter. The offense responded scoring 15 points to open up the lead to 26-21 as the teams broke for the locker room. Both of PSUGA’s previous wins had come when the team was leading at halftime and they were trying to improve to 3-0 in that scenario.

Lexus Santiago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) had six of her 16 points on the day in the first half. Her and Clybourn were tied for the team led with each having six points. PSUGA’s offense would come out hungry in the second half and for the first time this season, were able to blow the game wide open.

After being held to just six points in the first half, Taylor found her grove putting up 13 in the third quarter alone helping to lead the season-high 25-point attack. Taylor hit three three-pointers during the run and shot 8 for 11 (72.7%) from the floor in the quarter. Worthington Scranton outscored PSUGA 19-17 in the final quarter of play, but PSUGA had built up enough of a lead to hold on for the 68-50 win.

Taylor set a new career high with her 22 points while Lexus Santiago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) also set a career high with 16 points. Clybourn rounded out the top scorers putting up 14 on the day. The 68 points is the most scored in a single game this season and the ladies now improve to 3-0 when leading at halftime.

PSUGA now looks to end the season on a high note when they play their final game against PSU-Fayette on Monday at 6 p.m. It will be the first half of a Men’s and Women’s basketball doubleheader.
