Offensive Explosion Leads PSUGA to Second Victory

McKeesport, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Women’s Basketball Team (2-17, 2-9) saw five players score in double digits on their way to a 67-62 victory over PSU-DuBois (6-6, 14-8) on Tuesday night. It was their highest offensive output of the season and both offense and defense were working on this day.

PSUGA would take control of the game early on jumping out to a 9-4 lead with 3:32 left in the first quarter. PSU-DuBois would fight back scoring six of eight to make it 11-10 after one quarter of play. It was a back and forth game through the second quarter with the two teams trading punches before PSUGA went into the locker room with the slight 28-25 advantage.

Jayla Ellis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) had a big first half scoring 14 of her team high 16 points in that first half. Brandy Taylor (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) had eight first half points. PSUGA’s first win of the season came in a close game where PSUGA was leading heading into halftime. They were looking to be able to hold onto the lead once again here today in search of their second victory.

DuBois came out in the second half and took advantage of opportunities retaking the lead after going on a 7-0 run to take a 31-28 advantage. However, Taylor would make it a four point game on a three-pointer that capped off a 6-0 run and brought the score to 47-43 DuBois at the end of the third quarter.

PSUGA would recapture the lead for good going on an 8-0 run midway through the fourth quarter that was led by Tina Clybourn (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brashear) scoring four points including a three. It would be enough for PSUGA to hold on and pick up their second win of the season 67-62.

PSUGA scored the most points they have scored in a single game all season long and had five players finish in double digits on the day including Clybourn’s 11-point effort. PSUGA also continued to improve their shooting percentage shooting 37.5% on the day. Lexus Santiago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) set a new career high with 12 points on the night.

The win moves PSUGA to 2-17 on the season and gives them their second conference win of the year. This young group has worked hard every day and that has translated into individual success and now a win on the scoreboard. It was also the ladies first win at home this season and they will finish the final three games of their season here in the Wunderly Gymnasium.

The ladies get two days off before returning to action this Friday at 6 p.m. when they take on PSU-Wilkes Barre. It will be the first half of another Men’s and Women’s basketball doubleheader.
