PSUGA Looks to Get Back on Track vs. Central Penn

McKeesport, PA. – After going 0-2 at the Penn State Fayette tournament over the weekend, the Penn State Greater Allegheny Women’s Basketball Team (1-3, 0-0) looks to break a small three game losing streak when they face Central Penn (2-1, 0-0) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. PSUGA is in the middle of a stretch of five games in seven days as they prepare for a 17-game conference schedule that starts later this month.

PSUGA fought all the way to the final minutes on Saturday against Alfred State, but eventually fell in the end 63-52. PSUGA had the momentum early going on a 7-2 run to get out to the lead and then carried that to halftime as they broke for the locker room leading 33-26. PSUGA used the three-ball to get out in front as Tina Clybourn (Pittsburgh, PA./Brashear HS) hit four of her team leading five three-pointers in the first half.

However, as the game went on Alfred State kept chipping away at the lead and eventually tied things up 41-41 at the end of the third quarter. The Pioneers would put the game away outscoring PSUGA 22-11 in the final quarter to pick up the win and hand PSUGA their second loss of the weekend.

Clybourn had her best game of her career finishing with 17 points and going 5-8 from the three-point arc. Tearia Hartley (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North HS) led the offense with 18 points and has now finished in double digits in three of her team’s first four games this season.

Despite the loss, PSUGA played very well on Saturday shooting just under 34% from the floor and an astounding 46.2% from beyond the arc. Clybourn and Hartley accounted for all six three-pointers in the game and both helped PSUGA get out to the early lead. However, PSUGA turned the ball over 20 times as a team giving Alfred State opportunities that they took advantage of scoring 16 points off of turnovers.

Central Penn enters Tuesday’s game on an upswing after picking up two wins at the Central Penn Tip-off Tournament this weekend. They wrapped up the weekend with a 61-47 win over PSU-Mont Alto and took Friday’s contest 69-45 over PSU-Scranton. Ja’Lynn Burton-Jones has been the leader early on with 25 points so far this season.

PSUGA has faced Central Penn three times in the past going 1-2 against Central Penn. Their last meeting came on February 2nd 2016 when PSUGA was able to pick up a 65-48 win at Central Penn. Jayla Ellis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills HS) and Andrea Burroughs (New Rochelle, NY./New Rochelle HS) were the only current players to participate in that game scoring six and 10 points respectively.

Tip-off for Tuesday’s game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside the Wunderly Gymnasium. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and you can watch a live stream of the event at bit.ly/PSUGAYT.
