McKeesport, PA. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Women’s Basketball team (1-1, 0-0) kept their offense going on Thursday, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to Carlow (2-2, 0-0) 80-70. PSUGA had a pair of 20-point scorers, but it wasn’t enough for the women to pick up their second win of the year.
After the teams battled to a 12-12 score over the first six minutes of play, Carlow would get the first advantage of the game going on a 4-0 run to take a 16-12 lead with two and a half minutes to play. PSUGA found their groove hitting two three-pointers as part of an 8-2 run and they ended the first quarter ahead 20-19. Carlow would outscore PSUGA 15-8 in the second quarter and headed into halftime leading PSUGA 34-28.
It looked like Carlow would run away with the game after coming out and scoring the first six points of the second quarter, but PSUGA answered with a 9-2 run and brought the score back to 42-37 with 6:59 left in the third quarter. PSUGA would stay right with Carlow for the rest of the quarter and entered the final 10 minutes of play trailing 58-54.
PSUGA made the score 65-62 with 4:42 left after Tina Clybourn (Pittsburgh, PA./Brashear HS) hit her sixth three-pointer of the day; however, Carlow would outscore PSUGA 15-8 over the final 4:42 of play defeating PSUGA 80-70. With the loss, PSUGA fell to 1-1 on the season, but played their most competitive game ever against Carlow.
It was a big night for PSUGA’s top two scorers with Teaira Hartley (East Stroudsburg, PA./East Stroudsburg North HS) putting up 26 points and Clybourn finishing with a season high 20 points, including her six three-pointers. Clybourn also wrote her name in the PSUGA history books. She set the new career three-point record in women’s basketball history and now has 113 in her career.
PSUGA continues their stretch of non-conference action as they get set for what’s ahead in Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) play. After making the PSUAC playoffs last season, PSUGA is looking to return in 2019-2020 and will use their non-conference schedule as a measure of their success.
The PSUGA Women’s Basketball team is back in action when they take on Point Park on Tuesday, November 12th inside the Wunderley Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
