New Kensington, Pa. - The Penn State Greater Allegheny women's volleyball team took three sets to one in a Penn State University Athletic Conference match-up over Penn State New Kensington, Thursday evening.
Even though senior middle hitter Alyssa Finocchi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and sophomore setter Adrielle Brisbon (Fort Washington, Md./Friendly) paired up for five tallies, New Kensington took the first set 25-18.
Both teams went point-for-point through the first ten to start the series. Greater Allegheny began to pull away, as Brisbon dished out eight assists along with two block assists. Finocchi completed four kills on six total attempts, including one service ace and four total blocks. Freshman middle hitter Cheyenne Boulware (Centreville, Pa./Centreville) added two kills, a service ace, assist and block assist to the Greater Allegheny mark through the first set, Greater Allegheny victorious, 25-13.
Freshman right side Laura Vazquez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Maria Montessori) went 2-for-3 on kills while helping out with with one assist, one dig and a block assist. Brisbon dished out nine assists while Finocchi recorded four kills while freshman defensive specialist Tori Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) hit down three. Greater Allegheny took set three by a tally of 25-18.
Senior middle hitter Christina Floyd (Philadelphia, Pa./Sts. Neumann-Goretti) marked three digs, one kill and a block assist through set four. Finocchi had five kills, five digs and two total blocks while Brisbon assisted eight kills. GA took the final set 25-19, achieving their first conference win.
Finocchi finished with the match with 18 kills, 15 digs, four service aces and nine total blocks (four block solos and five block assists). Brisbon recorded 33 assists through the four sets, with eleven digs and two block assists. Johnston finished with eight kills and 14 digs.
Greater Allegheny (6-4, 1-1 PSUAC) looks onward to a non-conference match against Chatham University on Monday, September 15th. Game-time at Chatham is set for 6 p.m.
