McKeesport, Pa. – After going 2-2 at their quad match over the weekend, Penn State Greater Allegheny Volleyball (3-8, 2-5) is back in action on Thursday when they face off against Westmoreland County Community College (1-13-1, 0-10) in non-conference action at 6 p.m.
PSUGA picked up some momentum over the weekend as they were able to pick up their first two conference wins of the season beating Penn State Schuylkill three sets to one and Penn State York three sets to nothing. Their two weekend losses came at the hands of Penn State Brandywine three sets to nothing and Penn State Mont Alto three sets to one.
PSUGA played their best volleyball of the season over the weekend and showed that they have the ability to play for an entire match. Hayley Maksin (Port Vue, Pa./South Allegheny) and Laura Vazquez Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Maria Montessori) were the offensive leaders for PSUGA each averaging seven kills per match. The serving game is what made the difference against Penn State York as PSUGA picked up 14 service aces in the three sets to nothing victory, their first clean sweep of the season.
PSUGA saw some early season struggles, but are looking to turn it around as the season comes to its conclusion. Westmoreland County Community College has also seen its fair share of struggles lately coming into this match-up 1-13-1 and 0-10 in conference play.
Their last time out, however, they were able to pick up a victory sweeping Allegany College of Maryland three set to nothing. It was their first victory of the season and snapped a 13-game losing streak.
These two teams have faced off once already this season inside the Wunderly gymnasium where PSUGA picked up the victory winning the match three sets to one. Marina Puharre Selmi (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Objectivo) had a big offensive day collecting a team high 11 kills in 24 total attack opportunities. Laura Vazquez Diaz also collected 24 total attack opportunities and six kills in the contest.
WCCC leads the all-time match-up between these two teams with a record of 6-4 in matchups. PSUGA is looking to make it two in a row against WCCC and keep building on their momentum from over the weekend.
The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Westmoreland County Community College. The PSUGA Volleyball team returns home on Sunday where they will participate in a quad match starting at 12 p.m.
