Volleyball Set to Open Home Half of PSUAC Play

McKeesport, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Volleyball team (1-4, 0-1) gets ready to open the home half of their Penn State University Athletic Conference schedule when they take on Penn State DuBois (3-0, 0-0) on Saturday September 23rd at 1 p.m.

The PSUGA ladies are coming off of a 3-0 sweep at the hands of Penn State Beaver in their PSUAC conference opener on Tuesday night. The first two sets of that matchup were dominated by PSU-Beaver as they won the sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-14. However, the PSUGA ladies showed great fight in the final set giving Beaver all they could handle before eventually falling by just three points losing the set 25-22.

Laura Vazquez Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Marina Montessori) and Kaylee Holtzman (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) lead the offensive attack for PSUGA in that contest as each collected eight total attacks and Holtzman lead the team with three kills. Vazquez Diaz also shined on the defensive side collecting a team high six digs in that contest while Dolores Kuzmanko (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) came in right behind her with three digs.

The ladies gained some confidence at the end of the match as they showed in that final set that they have the ability to compete with some of the best teams in the PSUAC. They will look to take that momentum into Saturday’s matchup where they face off against a team in Penn State DuBois that is not only unbeaten on the season at 3-0 but has also not lost a set so far in 2017/18.

PSU-DuBois is coming off of a 3-0 sweep as they defeated Pitt-Titusville on Tuesday night. It was total domination by PSU-DuBois as they won the three sets handedly by scores of 25-9, 25-9, and 25-13. Melody Young lead the offensive attack picking up 11 kills in 20 total attacks in the victory, PSU-DuBois is playing their first PSUAC Conference game of the season and look to keep their momentum going.

However, for as good as PSU-DuBois has been lately, PSUGA has absolutely dominated the series between these two teams. PSUGA has won the last 12 matches dating back to the 2011/12 season and has not lost a set to PSU-DuBois since back on September 11th 2016 when they won the match three sets to one. In that contest Vazquez Diaz and former Lion Tori Johnson led the team with seven kills and 18 total attacks each in the contest.

The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. in the Wunderly Gymnasium on the campus of Penn State Greater Allegheny.
