Game Preview: vs. Westmoreland County Community College

McKeesport, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Volleyball team (0-3, 0-0) is set to open the home half of their regular season as they take on Westmoreland County Community College on Thursday September 7th 2017 in the Wunderly Gymnasium at 7 p.m.

PSUGA and WCCC did not face each other last season, however, they did face off in the 2015/16 season where Westmoreland County CC beat PSUGA three sets to one. Senior Laura Vazquez Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Maria Montessori) and Junior Andrea Burroughs (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) are the only two players from this year’s team that took part in that contest.

Vazquez Diaz collected 12 kills and eight digs in 34 total attempts while starting the contest, and Burroughs had two kills in four total attempts. In the match Westmoreland County CC won the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-13. Then, PSUGA would storm back to win the third set 25-23 before Westmoreland CC would seal the deal with a victory in the fourth and final set 25-20.

Westmoreland County CC has lead the matchups between these two teams dating back to the 2011/2012 season as they have a record of 6-3 against PSUGA and have beat the Lions in sets 19 to 10 in those last six seasons. Westmoreland CC leads the series at PSUGA with a record of 4-1 and at Westmoreland CC with a record of 2-1.

Penn State Greater Allegheny started its 2017/18 season last weekend taking part in the Penn State Beaver Tournament at Penn State Beaver where they went 0-3 in their three matches, but played competitive volleyball. They were able to take their first set of the season during their loss to Penn State Beaver three sets to one on September 2nd. It was the first shot for this new core of GA volleyball players to work together and was their first time working under new head coach Alyssa Finocchi.

Coach Finocchi, a former volleyball player at Penn State Greater Allegheny, was pleased with the play by her team in the last two matches at the Penn State Beaver Tournament and is looking forward to playing in front of the home crowd on Thursday

The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the Wunderly Gymnasium on the campus of Penn State Greater Allegheny. Come out and support PSUGA as they kick off another exciting season of Penn State University Athletic Conference Volleyball action.
