Volleyball Drops Tough Match to Fayette

Lemont Furnace, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Volleyball Team (8-9, 6-6) had their six game winning streak snapped on Wednesday as they fell to Penn State Fayette (15-6, 9-3) three sets to nothing.

Things did not go PSUGA’s way at all in this contest as they dropped all three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-16, and 25-4. The communication that had been a strong suit over the course of their win streak seemed to be lacking this time out. There were not many offensive opportunities for PSUGA, and as a result, they really were unable to get anything going.

Laura Vazquez Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Marina Montessori) continues to lead the PSUGA team and in her senior year, is using that leadership to help guide some of the newer players along. Hayley Maksin (Port Vue, Pa./South Allegheny) and Kaylee Holtzman (Mckeesport, Pa./McKeesport) have also stepped up as all three are among  the leaders on this PSUGA team offensively.

With the loss, PSUGA now falls to 6-6 in conference play and after a great weekend of PSUAC play that saw them go 4-0, they currently sit in seventh place in the PSUAC right behind Penn State Lehigh Valley. They still have a shot at cracking the PSUAC playoff bracket, however, they need to pick up some wins against some of the tougher opponents in the PSUAC.

The ladies currently have four games left in the regular season as they have to play Penn State Dubois, Penn State Beaver, Penn State New Kensington, and Penn State Fayette. They would need to win at least two of those four games to get them the best opportunity to try to make the PSUAC playoffs.

The ladies are back in action this weekend as they have two of their remaining four PSUAC matchups. First they will go on the road to battle Penn State DuBois on Saturday at 2 p.m. Then, they will finish the weekend on Sunday when they host Penn State Beaver at 2 p.m.
