Volleyball Loses Tight One to Beaver in Five Sets

McKeesport, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Volleyball Team (8-10, 6-8) played hard today but fell in a tight contest to Penn State Beaver (15-8, 11-3) three sets to two. It all came down to the sudden death set, but PSUGA just didn’t have enough in the tank to finish it out with a victory.

The first set of this one went all PSU-Beaver’s way as they picked up a 25-16 victory to get the match started off. However, PSUGA gave them all they could handle and more in the second and third sets picking up victories at 25-23 and 25-22. PSU-Beaver was able to tie the match at two sets a piece getting a 25-22 win in the fourth set before capturing the victory in the 15-point fifth set 15-9.

Laura Vazquez Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Maria Montessori) continued to lead the offensive attack today collecting a team high 34 total attacks and four kills. Freshman Kaylee Holtzman (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) lead her team in kills on the day with seven on 31 total attack attempts.

Hayley Maksin (Port Vue, Pa./South Allegheny) held up the defensive side of the ball collecting a team high 24 digs in the contest. She was also serving as the key communicator on the court calling out plays to let her team know what was happening on the court.

With the loss, PSUGA now faces an uphill battle if they want a shot at making the Penn State University Athletic Conference playoffs. They have two games remaining and they would need to win both of those contests to give them a shot at making it. They play Penn State New Kensington on Wednesday October 18th and will finish the regular season on Tuesday October 24th against Penn State Fayette.

PSUGA will try to regroup before their match against Penn State New Kensington and end their season on a high note against some of the toughest competition in the PSUAC.
